A handyman for Berwick, Narre Warren and the hills

Berwick Handyman looks after the small and medium jobs that keep homes in Casey working properly. We fix doors that stick, patch holes in walls, rebuild sagging gates, refix loose fence palings, replace mouldy silicone, mount TVs, hang mirrors and shelves, assemble flat-pack furniture, clear gutters, repair decks, fit grab rails and get rentals ready for the next tenant. If it is on your to-do list and it does not need a licensed electrician, plumber, gas fitter or builder, there is a good chance we can do it.

We work across Berwick and nine neighbouring suburbs: Narre Warren, Narre Warren North, Narre Warren South, Narre Warren East, Hallam, Hampton Park, Harkaway, Lynbrook and Lyndhurst. That takes in everything from the old streets around Berwick’s High Street to the newest estates in Lyndhurst, and from the acreage in the hills above Harkaway to the busy family suburbs around Fountain Gate and Casey Central.

Our approach is simple. Tell us what you need, ideally with photos. We send back a written quote that explains what is included. We turn up when we say we will, do the work properly, clean up and take away the rubbish. If something on your list needs a licensed trade, we tell you straight away rather than attempting it.

Why people call a handyman

Most home repairs are not big enough for a builder and are too fiddly or time-consuming to do on a weekend. They pile up: a list on the fridge, a note on the phone, the shelf still leaning against the wall where it has been for three months. A handyman clears that list in one or two visits, using the right tools and materials, and does it in a way that lasts.

People in Casey call us for lots of reasons:

  • They have a busy job and a busy family, and weekends are precious
  • They have just moved in and have a long list of installations
  • They are selling and need the house to present well
  • They are a landlord or property manager preparing a rental between tenancies
  • They are getting older, and ladders and heavy lifting are not as easy as they once were
  • They tried the job themselves and want it done properly
  • They own a large property and cannot keep up with the maintenance

Whatever the reason, the goal is the same: get the jobs done, done well, without fuss.

Where we work

Berwick Handyman covers ten suburbs in the City of Casey. Each area has its own character and its own typical jobs, and each has a page with more detail.

Berwick

The heart of our patch. The old village around High Street and Wilson Botanic Park has older homes with established trees, while Berwick Springs and the estates south of the railway line are newer brick veneer family homes now reaching the age where silicone, hinges, fences and flyscreens need attention. See handyman Berwick.

Narre Warren

Centred on Fountain Gate and Bunjil Place, Narre Warren has homes from the 1970s to today, plus units and townhouses close to the station. Lots of flat-pack, TV mounting and rental repairs here. See handyman Narre Warren.

Narre Warren South

Family estates from the 1990s and 2000s around Casey Central and Amberly Park, with homes now in their second and third decades. See handyman Narre Warren South.

Narre Warren North, Narre Warren East and Harkaway

The hills. Acreage, bush blocks and lifestyle properties with long fences, big gates, decks with views and gutters full of gum leaves. See Narre Warren North, Narre Warren East and Harkaway.

Hallam and Hampton Park

Established suburbs with homes built from the 1970s onward, a strong rental market and, in Hallam, an industrial and commercial area. See Hallam and Hampton Park.

Lynbrook and Lyndhurst

Newer estates around wetlands and lakes, where installations and first-generation maintenance are the main jobs. See Lynbrook and Lyndhurst.

How a job works

1. Tell us about it

Use the free quote form. Describe each job, and add photos if you can. Photos make a big difference: they show us the wall type, the damage, the access and the materials we will need.

2. Get a written quote

We review your request and either reply with a few questions or send a written quote. The quote sets out what is included, who supplies materials and anything excluded. We do not publish prices, because no two jobs are the same.

3. Book a time

Once you are happy with the quote, we book a time that suits you. For rentals and vacant homes, we can arrange key collection.

4. We do the work

We arrive with the tools and materials needed, protect floors and furniture, do the work and keep you informed. If we find something unexpected, such as rot behind paint or water behind tiles, we stop and talk to you before going further.

5. Clean up and check

We clean up, take away offcuts and rubbish from the job, and walk you through what we have done. For rentals, we can send before-and-after photos.

What makes a good handyman job

A good repair should be invisible or obviously better than before, and it should last. That comes down to a few habits:

  • The right fixing for the wall. Plasterboard, brick, steel stud, timber and tile each need different fixings. We do not hang a heavy mirror on a plastic plug.
  • Finding the cause. A door that sticks might be a loose hinge, a settled frame or swelling from moisture. Fixing the cause means the problem does not come back.
  • Preparation. Silicone only lasts if the old silicone and mould are removed completely. Paint only looks right if the surface is prepared. Good preparation takes time, and it is the part that matters most.
  • Honesty about limits. If a job needs an electrician, plumber, builder or engineer, we say so.
  • Tidiness. We work cleanly and leave your home as we found it, apart from the repair.

Homes in Casey and what they need

Casey is one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Victoria, and its housing spans more than fifty years. That variety shows up in the work we do.

Older brick veneer homes

Homes from the 1970s and 1980s in Hampton Park, Hallam, Narre Warren and parts of Berwick are solidly built but showing their age. Aluminium windows and sliding doors need new rollers. Hollow-core doors have holes and loose hinges. Original kitchens have sagging doors. Bathrooms have cracked grout and old silicone. Timber fences have rotten posts.

1990s and 2000s estates

Homes in Berwick Springs, Narre Warren South and Lynbrook are reaching the age where builder-grade fittings wear out. Silicone fails, robe doors jump their tracks, cornices crack as frames settle, decks need oiling and boards replaced, and original fences need posts.

New estates

In Lyndhurst and newer parts of other suburbs, the jobs are mostly installations: TVs, curtains, shelving, flat-pack and storage. Builder warranty items should go back to the builder first.

Acreage and bush blocks

In Harkaway, Narre Warren North and Narre Warren East, scale is the challenge: long fences, multiple gates, big decks and verandahs, sheds, long driveways and gutters under gum trees.

Clay soils

Parts of Casey sit on reactive clay that moves with wet and dry seasons. That shows up as cornice cracks, sticking doors and gaps that open and close through the year. Minor cracks can be repaired; large or growing cracks need a building inspector.

For landlords and property managers

Casey has a large rental market, and rentals need reliable, documented work. We repair properties between tenancies and during leases, work from work orders, coordinate access and send before-and-after photos. We understand rental timeframes and the importance of getting a property ready for the next tenant. See property managers and end-of-lease repairs.

For local businesses

Shops, offices, clinics, cafés and warehouses also need small repairs. We patch walls, fix doors and closers, build shelving, hang signage and whiteboards, assemble office furniture and do make-good work between tenancies, outside trading hours where needed. See commercial handyman.

For older residents

Many people in Casey want to stay in the homes they love as they get older. Small changes can make that safer and easier: grab rails in the shower and beside the toilet, handrails on steps, lever handles, brighter globes in dark hallways and removing trip hazards. We install rails securely into studs or masonry, and we can follow an occupational therapist’s recommendations. We also take care of ladder jobs like gutters and high globes, so you do not need to climb. See aged-care and disability rails.

What we do not do

To keep everyone safe and within the law, we do not do:

  • Electrical work, including new power points, light fittings and hard-wired smoke alarms
  • Plumbing, including taps, toilets, drainage and tank connections
  • Gas work
  • Structural building work or work requiring a registered builder
  • Asbestos removal or work on suspected asbestos materials
  • Tree removal
  • Waterproofing or full bathroom renovations

If your list includes any of these, we will tell you which trade you need.

Common jobs we see every week

Some jobs come up again and again across Casey. If any of these sound familiar, you are not alone:

  • The door that will not close. Usually a dropped hinge, a moved striker plate or a frame that has shifted with the seasons. Most can be fixed in under an hour.
  • The hole behind the door. A door handle has gone through the plasterboard. We patch it, prepare it for paint and fit a door stop so it does not happen again.
  • The black silicone in the shower. Mould has got into the sealant. Cleaning it rarely works for long; removing it and resealing does.
  • The sliding door that drags. Worn rollers and a dirty track. New rollers and a clean usually make it glide again.
  • The gate that will not latch. The post has moved or the hinges have worn. We realign, rehang or rebuild it.
  • The torn flyscreen. We rescreen it with new mesh, including pet-resistant mesh if needed.
  • The TV still on the cabinet. We mount it securely and tidy the cables.
  • The flat-pack still in its box. We assemble it and anchor anything tall.

Working safely

Safety matters on every job, for you and for us. We use proper ladders and work-at-height practices, scan walls for pipes and cables before drilling, check for suspected asbestos in older homes before cutting or drilling, and keep work areas tidy so nobody trips. If a job cannot be done safely with handyman equipment, such as steep two-storey roofs, we will recommend a specialist.
