Carpentry

Carpentry is the backbone of handyman work. A surprising number of household jobs come down to cutting, fitting and fixing timber properly: a new shelf in the pantry, a replacement architrave, a timber step that has rotted, a gap that needs a trim, a cupboard built into an awkward corner. These jobs are usually too small for a building company but need more skill and tools than most people have at home.

We take on small carpentry jobs and timber repairs across Berwick, Narre Warren and the City of Casey. Our focus is practical, well-finished work, built to last and fitted to the realities of an existing house.

  • Simple built-in storage, such as under-stair cupboards and alcove shelves
  • Replacing architraves, skirting boards and trims
  • Door frame and jamb repairs
  • Timber steps, landings and small stairs (non-structural)
  • Rotten timber repairs on fascias, window sills, door frames and weatherboards
  • Small weatherboard replacements
  • Outdoor timber: planter boxes, garden edging, bench seats, bin enclosures
  • Fixing loose or squeaky stair treads and balustrades
  • Cutting in noggings and backing for fixtures
  • Timber battens, cladding and feature details
  • Repairs to timber windows and sills (non-glazing)
  • Repairing and modifying furniture and cabinetry
  • Trimming and fitting doors after new flooring

Built-in shelving and storage

Pantries, laundries and garages often lack useful storage. Custom shelving built to fit the space makes the most of every centimetre. We can build simple shelving from melamine, plywood or timber, fixed securely to suit the load. In robes, we can add shelves and hanging rails. Under-stair and alcove spaces can become cupboards or open shelving. For full joinery, such as kitchens or large built-in wardrobes with doors and drawers, a cabinet maker is often better value.

Trims, architraves and skirting

Trims finish the junctions in a house: around doors, along floors and where walls meet ceilings. They get damaged, go missing during renovations or need replacing when doors and floors change. We cut and fit trims with clean mitres and joins, then fill and prepare them for paint. See also floor and skirting repairs.

Rotten timber repairs

Timber exposed to weather eventually rots if paint fails or water sits on it. Common spots include fascias, the bottom of door frames, window sills, weatherboards near the ground and pergola posts. Small areas of rot can be cut out and replaced with new timber, or filled with epoxy timber fillers. Larger sections are replaced entirely. We find the extent of the rot before quoting, because what looks like a small soft spot can be bigger underneath.

Weatherboards

Weatherboard homes, more common in older parts of Berwick and on acreage around Harkaway, Narre Warren North and Narre Warren East, need occasional board replacements where rot or damage has occurred. Matching profiles is important; many standard profiles are still available, while older ones may need sourcing. Note that some homes have fibre cement weatherboards that may contain asbestos if old; we check before cutting.

Steps and landings

Small timber steps at back doors, garage entries and deck edges often rot or come loose. We rebuild these with treated timber or hardwood, with even risers and secure treads. Larger or higher stairs, especially those needing balustrades, may need a building permit and a registered builder.

Outdoor timber projects

Small outdoor projects include:

  • Raised garden beds and planter boxes
  • Bin enclosures and screens
  • Timber bench seats
  • Garden edging
  • Shelves and benches in sheds and garages
  • Simple gates and screens

Working with an existing house

Real houses are not square. Walls lean slightly, floors slope and corners are not quite 90 degrees. Good carpentry in an existing home means scribing, shimming and adjusting so new work fits neatly against old. We measure carefully and cut to suit the actual space.

Structural work

Some carpentry work is structural, such as replacing load-bearing framing, building decks over a certain height, or altering walls. Structural building work requires a registered building practitioner and may need a permit. We focus on non-structural carpentry, and we will tell you if a job crosses into structural territory.

Timber choices

  • Treated pine: affordable, suitable for outdoor use when appropriately treated
  • Hardwood: durable and strong, good for steps, sills and outdoor work
  • MDF and pine mouldings: common for internal trims, paint finish
  • Plywood: strong and stable, suits shelving and built-ins
  • Melamine board: suited to robe and laundry shelving

We recommend materials suited to the job and budget.

Finishing

New timber needs finishing. Internal trims are primed and painted to match, and outdoor timber is painted, oiled or stained for protection. We can finish the work or leave it ready for your painter. See painting touch-ups.

Carpentry in Casey homes

Different eras bring different carpentry needs. 1980s and 1990s brick veneer homes in Hampton Park, Hallam and Narre Warren often need trims, doors and built-ins updated. Older homes near Berwick village may have period mouldings worth preserving and replicating. New homes in Lynbrook, Lyndhurst and Narre Warren South often need extra storage and shelving added after handover. Acreage properties around Harkaway and Narre Warren North have sheds, verandahs and outbuildings with timber that needs ongoing maintenance.

Planning a carpentry job

For built-ins and shelving, the more detail you can give the better: the space dimensions, what will be stored, whether you want open shelving or doors, and the finish you prefer. Photos and a rough sketch are very helpful. For repairs, photos of the damage and the surrounding area let us plan materials.

Tools and workshop

Most carpentry jobs can be done on site with portable tools: saws, routers, sanders and nail guns. We set up a cutting area outside or in the garage where possible to keep dust out of the house. For more complex pieces, some cutting may be done off site.

Garage storage

Garages in Casey homes are often full of stuff with nowhere to put it. Simple timber or steel-framed shelving, overhead storage platforms (within structural limits), workbenches and tool walls can transform a garage. Overhead storage needs to be fixed to suitable structure, and we will check what your roof framing can carry before building anything above head height.

Robe and pantry fit-outs

Builder-standard robes often have a single shelf and hanging rail. Adding extra shelves, a second hanging rail for shirts, shoe shelves and drawers can double usable space. Pantries can get extra shelves, pull-out baskets and spice racks. We build to suit how you use the space.

Window and door frames

Timber window sills and door frames rot at the bottom where water sits. We can splice in new timber at the base of a door jamb, replace sills, and repair window frames. These are fiddly repairs that need care to match the existing profile and keep weather out.

Repairs to furniture

Wobbly chairs, loose table legs, broken drawer runners and cracked timber can often be repaired with glue, clamps, dowels and new fixings. We repair everyday household furniture. Fine antique furniture restoration is specialist work.

Child and pet gates

Timber gates at the top and bottom of stairs, across doorways and around outdoor areas keep children and pets safe. Custom timber gates can be built to fit unusual openings where off-the-shelf gates do not. They must be fixed securely, especially at the top of stairs.

Timber screens and privacy

Timber slat screens can give privacy on decks and patios, hide bins and air conditioning units, or add a feature to a garden. We build screens using treated pine or hardwood battens on a timber or steel frame, fixed securely so they handle wind loads.

Doors after new flooring

New floating floors, carpet or tiles often raise the floor level, so internal doors drag or will not close. We remove the doors, trim the bottoms square with a track saw, seal the cut edge and rehang them. We also adjust or replace door stops and trims that were affected by the new floor. Doing this straight after flooring is installed prevents scuffs and damage to the new surface.

Fixing squeaky stairs and loose balustrades

Timber stairs develop squeaks as treads and risers loosen over time. We can usually fix squeaks by refixing treads with screws and glue, from above or below. Loose balustrades and handrails are a safety issue, especially for children and older people, and we refix posts, rails and balusters securely. If the balustrade does not meet current height or gap requirements, we can advise on options.

Noggings and backing

Heavy items like wall-hung vanities, TVs on articulating arms, grab rails and heavy shelving need solid backing in the wall. Where there is no stud in the right place, we cut into the plasterboard, fit timber noggings between studs, and patch and prepare the wall for paint. This is the right way to support a heavy fixture on plasterboard, and it is far stronger than relying on plasterboard anchors.

Measuring and quoting accurately

Carpentry quotes depend on accurate measurements and an understanding of what is behind the surface. For repair work, we may need to see the timber in person to judge the extent of rot or damage. For built-ins, we take measurements on site before ordering material, so everything fits first time.

Hardware and fixings

Good carpentry relies on the right fixings: stainless or galvanised screws outdoors, construction adhesive where appropriate, concealed fixings for a clean look, and heavy-duty brackets where loads are high. We choose fixings that suit the material and the conditions so the work stays solid for years.

Leaving the site clean

Carpentry creates sawdust and offcuts. We cut outside where we can, use dust extraction on tools, vacuum as we go and take offcuts away. You should not be finding sawdust in corners a week later.
