How to Get an Accurate Handyman Quote

A quote is only as good as the information behind it. Vague requests lead to vague quotes, surprises on the day and extra visits. A few minutes of preparation gets you a quote that matches the job.

Describe each job clearly

Instead of “fix the door”, try “the laundry door rubs at the top corner and will not latch; it is a hollow-core internal door”. Mention what is wrong, where it is and what you want the result to be.

Send photos

Photos are the single most helpful thing. For each job, take:

  • A wide shot showing the area and access
  • A close-up of the damage or the spot where something will go
  • A photo of any product you have bought, including the label or model

For fences and decks, a photo along the full length helps estimate the size.

Measure where you can

Measurements help with materials. Useful examples:

  • Flyscreen sizes (frame height and width)
  • Length of fence needing repair
  • Size of a deck area
  • Wall width where a TV or shelf will go

Say who supplies materials

Let us know if you have already bought items, such as a TV bracket, towel rail, blinds or flat-pack furniture, or whether you want us to supply them. If you want us to supply, mention any preferences for finish or style.

Note access and conditions

  • Two-storey work or high ceilings
  • Steep or long driveways
  • Pets on site
  • Parking restrictions
  • Owners corporation rules

Group jobs together

A list of several jobs is usually more efficient than separate visits. Prioritise the list in case not everything fits.

Ask what is included

A clear quote should say what work is included, who supplies materials, whether rubbish removal is included and what is excluded. If something is unclear, ask before booking.

Expect some uncertainty

Some jobs reveal more once work starts: rot behind paint, water damage behind tiles, or a hidden pipe where a bracket should go. A good tradesperson will stop and talk to you before going beyond the agreed scope.

Know what needs a licensed trade

Electrical, plumbing, gas, structural and asbestos work need licensed professionals. If your list includes these items, a handyman should tell you and exclude them from the quote.

Why we do not publish prices

Every job is different. A price list cannot account for the wall type, the access, the condition of the timber or the number of jobs on your list. A quote based on your actual job is fairer for everyone.
