Gutters are easy to forget because you cannot see inside them from the ground. The first sign of trouble is usually water pouring over the edge in a downpour, a damp patch on the ceiling near the eaves, or a plant growing out of the gutter line. By then, leaves and silt have often been building up for a couple of seasons.
We clean gutters and downpipes on single-storey homes across Berwick, Narre Warren and the City of Casey. Along with clearing the debris, we check that water is flowing to the downpipes, that brackets are holding, and that downpipes are delivering water into the stormwater system rather than onto your slab.
What our gutter cleaning includes
- Removing leaves, twigs, seed pods, silt and moss from gutters by hand and with suitable tools
- Bagging debris for removal or green waste, rather than leaving it on the ground
- Flushing gutters with water to check they drain toward the outlets
- Clearing blocked downpipe outlets and checking downpipes flow
- Checking gutter brackets and refixing loose sections where accessible
- Sealing small leaks at gutter joins and end caps with suitable sealant
- Checking that downpipes are connected at the base and not discharging against the house
- Clearing valley gutters on single-storey roofs where safely accessible
- Removing debris from leaf guards, or noting where guards are causing blockages
- Before-and-after photos on request
Why clean gutters matters
Overflow and water damage
When gutters are full, rain spills over the front edge, or worse, over the back edge into the eaves and wall cavity. That can cause damp, rot in fascias and eaves linings, and stains or damage inside. Overflowing gutters also dump water right next to the slab, which can contribute to soil movement and cracking in reactive clay areas.
Rust and corrosion
Wet debris sitting in steel gutters holds moisture against the metal year-round. That speeds up rust, especially at joins and in older gutters. Regular clearing extends gutter life.
Pests
Clogged gutters with standing water and rotting leaves attract mosquitoes and make a nice home for birds and rodents.
Bushfire preparation
On blocks near bushland, leaves in gutters are a fire risk because embers can ignite them. Areas on the edge of the Dandenong foothills, including parts of Harkaway and Narre Warren East, may face higher bushfire risk. CFA guidance recommends clearing gutters before the fire season.
How often should gutters be cleaned?
It depends mostly on trees. Homes with large eucalypts, oaks or plane trees overhead, common in established streets of Berwick and on acreage blocks around Harkaway and Narre Warren North, may need cleaning twice a year or more. Homes in newer estates with young street trees, such as Lynbrook, Lyndhurst and parts of Narre Warren South, may only need a yearly check. A good rule of thumb is to clean before winter, after autumn leaf drop, and before summer if you are in a bushfire-prone area.
Single-storey and safety
We clean gutters on single-storey homes and accessible areas using appropriate ladders and safe work practices. We do not walk on steep roofs, fragile roofing or two-storey roof areas that need edge protection or specialist height-safety setups. If your home is double-storey or has a steep pitch, we will tell you and suggest a gutter cleaning specialist with the right equipment. Tile roofs can be fragile, and we take care not to crack tiles.
Downpipes and stormwater
Gutters are only half the system. Downpipes carry water from the gutter to the stormwater pipe in the ground. Common problems include blockages at the top outlet, downpipes disconnected at the base so water discharges onto the ground, and blocked stormwater pits. We clear the outlets and accessible sections, check that the downpipe is connected, and let you know if the underground stormwater seems blocked. Clearing underground stormwater drains is a plumber’s job, often with a drain camera or jetter.

Gutter guards
Gutter guards can reduce how often you need to clean, but they are not maintenance-free. Fine debris and seeds can build up on top of mesh or under poorly fitted guards. Some guards also make access harder. If you have guards, we can clean on top and, where they can be lifted, underneath. If you are thinking of installing guards, ask a specialist about the right product for your trees and roof type.
Small gutter repairs
While cleaning, we can fix minor issues:
- Re-sealing leaking joins, corners and end caps
- Refixing or adding gutter brackets on loose runs
- Adjusting short sections where the fall has been lost
- Refitting loose downpipe sections and clips
Replacing gutters, fascias or roof sheets, and repairs on steep or high areas, are roofing or plumbing work. We will recommend the right trade if we find these issues.
Signs your gutters need attention
- Water spilling over the gutter edge in rain
- Plants or weeds growing from the gutter
- Sagging gutters or gaps between gutter and fascia
- Water stains on eaves or walls under the gutters
- Pooling water near the foundations after rain
- Birds nesting or nesting material visible along the roof edge
Pairing with other outdoor jobs
Gutter cleaning works well alongside other outdoor maintenance. Many customers book it with pressure washing of paths and driveways, fence repairs, or a general property maintenance visit. For rental properties, gutter cleaning is often part of the regular maintenance cycle between tenancies.

Trees and gutters in Casey
The south-east has a mix of street trees and garden trees that shed in different ways. Eucalypts shed leaves and bark through the year, with heavier drops in summer and after storms. Deciduous trees such as oaks, elms and liquidambars drop heavily in autumn, often filling gutters in a matter of weeks. Pine needles and casuarina needles knit together into mats that block outlets. Seed pods and gumnuts lodge in downpipe outlets. Knowing what trees overhang your roof helps plan when to clean.
Water tanks and first-flush diverters
Many homes on acreage, and some suburban homes, collect rainwater in tanks. Clean gutters matter even more here, because debris washes into tanks, fouling the water and blocking inlet screens. First-flush diverters and leaf screens at the tank need regular clearing. We can clean gutters, clear inlet screens and empty first-flush diverters as part of a visit. Tank servicing, pumps and plumbing connections are for a plumber.
Box gutters and internal gutters
Some homes, particularly architect-designed and some older homes, have box gutters set inside the roof line. These can overflow straight into the house if blocked. Many box gutters are hard to access safely and may involve walking on the roof. We will assess whether we can safely access them; if not, a roofing specialist is the right call.
What you will see when we finish
Gutters cleared to the outlets, water running to the downpipes, debris bagged or removed, and paths and garden beds under the gutters cleared of anything that fell. On request we take before-and-after photos, which is handy for landlords, agents and owners who live away.
Preparing for a gutter clean
- Let us know about any dogs so gates can be managed
- Move cars from the driveway if the ladder needs to go there
- Tell us about any fragile roof areas, solar panels or skylights
- Mention any known leaks or overflow spots so we check them closely
- Tell us whether you would like debris left in your green bin or removed

Solar panels and gutters
Solar panels are common on Casey rooftops and can catch leaves and create pockets where debris builds up beside the gutter. We clean gutters near panels carefully and do not walk on or lean on panels. Cleaning the panels themselves is a specialist job, and any electrical issue with the system should go to a qualified solar installer.
Eaves and fascias
While we are at gutter height, we look at the eaves and fascias. Peeling paint, soft timber and gaps where possums or birds could get in are easy to spot from the ladder. We note these in our summary and can quote for repairs, such as replacing a short length of soft fascia board or patching an eaves lining, where they are within handyman scope.
Gutters after storms
Storms can drop branches and heavy debris into gutters in an afternoon, and strong winds can loosen brackets and downpipes. After a big storm, a quick check is worthwhile even if you cleaned recently. We can clear storm debris, refix anything that has come loose and let you know if there is damage to the roof itself that needs a roofer.
Gutter cleaning for rentals and owners who live away
Landlords and owners who do not live at the property often do not know the state of the gutters until a tenant reports a leak. A scheduled gutter clean before winter, with photos sent afterward, takes that worry away. We can coordinate access through your property manager and include a short summary of anything else we noticed from the ladder.
Leaf litter around the house
Gutters are not the only place leaves gather. Debris collects in the corners of paths, along fence lines, in window wells and around the base of downpipes, blocking stormwater grates and holding moisture against walls. We can clear these areas in the same visit so water drains freely all the way to the street.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I get my gutters cleaned?
It depends on the trees around your home. Homes under large trees may need cleaning twice a year or more, while homes in newer estates may only need a yearly check. Before winter is a good time for most homes.
Do you clean two-storey gutters?
We clean single-storey and safely accessible gutters. Two-storey or steep roofs that need edge protection or specialist height-safety equipment are outside our scope, and we will tell you if that applies.
Do you take the debris away?
Yes. We bag debris for your green bin or take it away, and clear anything that fell onto paths or garden beds.
Can you fix leaking gutters?
We can seal small leaks at joins and end caps, refix brackets and adjust short sections. Replacing gutters or fascias is roofing or plumbing work, and we will recommend the right trade.
Can you clear blocked downpipes?
We clear the outlets and accessible downpipe sections. Blockages deeper in the underground stormwater system need a plumber with drain-clearing equipment.
